passing through

Zion National Park, UT On my third day in Zion, the clouds finally began to break. _______ Passing Through, that's the theme over at www.pullfoc.us this week, weird.

last light

Sunset from the summit of Mt. Jo, Adirondack State Park, NY Better bigger, of course. Only a few days left to submit to the theme "maybe you're right" over at pullfocus.

wispy reflections

Coco Beach, FL 13sec @ f/16 I spent most of the last two weeks down in Florida visiting my parents. It was 80 degrees on Christmas day and I didn't mind one bit that there was no snow or any Douglas Firs in sight. This wasn't really a photo-oriented trip but I did manage to sneak away for the occasional shot. This one was taken on the way back from Kennedy Space Center. My brothers did some shopping at Ron Jon's while I ran out to the beach to catch these clouds. I was pleasantly surprised how the low tide made for some nice reflections.

Pull Focus | The Very Beginning

Happy 2012! Super excited to launch a photo site with Tyler Finck. Simply put: this project was created to feature an interesting photo for an interesting theme, one week/person at a time. The schedule gives participants enough time to take photos for a theme (though that isn’t required). As photographers it is inspiring to see other photographers interpret the same theme in unique ways. As humans it is challenging to only select one photo. At the end of the year we’ll proudly display 52 featured photos and dozens of other submissions in print. It's going to be fun. pullfoc.us

wavelength

Lower Antelope Canyon, Page, AZ I admit it. I had no idea what I was doing in these slot canyons. I was just completely overwhelmed. There are compositions everywhere, which makes it really hard to find one good one...at least for me. There were also technical issues. I find I take my best photos when my camera becomes an extension of my mind and I just forget the gear is there. When I'm forced to become aware of technical limitations, the creative process suffers. I think I spent more time trying to solve my issues with flare and focus rather than trying to create a photograph. It was still fun, and I think I got a few decent pics - but it was a humbling experience.

third degree

Virgin River Narrows, Zion National Park This was taken on my second trip up the narrows in the four days I was in the area. Chris and I wanted to make sure we had the best light possible in the wall street area so we hopped in the water at 7am and was at the top of wall street by 8:30...we practically ran up that river. And don't let that warm light fool you - it was frickin' cold. The air temperature was around 35 and the water was a toasty 40. My toes are still cold. More on the narrows later...thanks for looking.

runaround

Jackrabbit Trail, Adirondack State Park, NY Just (last week) got back from a fantastic 11 day journey with Chris touring the southwest's great monuments to erosion. This is not from that trip. :) Those are coming...just as soon as I build up the courage to process them.

land of the living skies

Connery Pond, Adirondack State Park, New York Just returned from my week-long NE photo adventure. The color was variable at best, but I saw & photographed some great sunrises, hiked many miles, meet some great photographers, and crashed my friend Chris' (also a great photographer) getaway with his wife. Also? I shot about 5hrs of time-lapse video.... Overall, I'd say it was a success. More to come.
